Our Concussion Story…

In early 2021, our mother suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) from a fall. Just like many concussions, her initial symptoms were minor and CT scans showed no damage. Weeks later, she began experiencing severe neurological symptoms—chronic headaches, weakness, balance issues, and loss of peripheral vision—caused by a delayed brain bleed.

Watching our vibrant mother—who had always been the energetic caretaker for our two young children—suddenly confined to the couch and barely able to walk with a walker was heartbreaking. We wish we had a better way to 1. Diagnose her earlier and 2. Track her progress.

We were blessed to discover Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)—a natural, evidence-based therapy that uses increased oxygen levels to amplify the body’s healing processes. With the brain weighing about 2% of your entire bodyweight, but consuming approximately 20% of the total oxygen in your body… we found a way to decrease the inflammation and supercharge the healing.

If HBOT could provide such dramatic improvements for our mother after a severe TBI, imagine its potential for others dealing with concussions or brain-related trauma. Unfortunately, concussions are often overlooked and underestimated. Symptoms can be subtle and easily missed, leaving many to struggle silently with lingering effects like dizziness, headaches, and cognitive challenges.

Traditional approaches to concussion care can be frustratingly unspecific, often relying on subjective answers from clients about how they feel. That’s why we’ve integrated cutting-edge technology into our care. At HealthFit Physical Therapy & Chiropractic, we use FDA-cleared eye-tracking technology to provide objective findings about concussion-related impairments. This allows us to not only pinpoint the areas that need attention but also track your progress with measurable results. It’s a game-changer for both diagnosis and recovery.

As parents of two young children, we deeply value brain health and are committed to protecting the future of all our clients—whether they’re on the field or off it. We understand the importance of giving every individual, from athletes to busy professionals, the tools they need to recover fully and thrive.

Our comprehensive concussion program combines the best of modern technology and specialized rehabilitation. This includes:

  • Targeted therapies for vestibular, balance, and eye-tracking issues

  • Relief for dizziness, chronic headaches, and post-concussion symptoms

  • A graded approach to returning to activity and sport, modeled after the methods we’ve used to get professional athletes back on the field

With a background in sports medicine, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cirque du Soleil and the Los Angeles Football Club,  I’ve developed a strategic approach to concussion recovery. Now, that same expertise is available to every client we serve.

At HealthFit, we believe health is an investment. Our goal is to help you recover, regain confidence, and get back to doing what you love—better than ever.

Step 1: Identification of Concussion

Identifying concussions is crucial for parents, coaches, and the individuals experiencing symptoms because untreated concussions can lead to long-term damage to brain health. For parents and coaches, recognizing the signs of a concussion is the first step in preventing further harm. If someone continues playing or engaging in activities before fully recovering, they risk a second injury, known as second impact syndrome, which can result in severe brain damage or even be life-threatening. Early detection allows for proper rest and care, giving the brain the time it needs to heal and reducing the risk of lasting complications. It also ensures a safer return to school, sports, or other activities.

For the person suffering from a concussion, identifying the injury is just as critical. Symptoms like headaches, dizziness, or trouble focusing are often brushed off, but they are the brain’s way of signaling that something is wrong. Without proper attention, these issues can become chronic, leading to long-term challenges like ongoing pain, mood swings, or memory problems. By identifying a concussion early, individuals can take charge of their recovery, access treatments that target their specific needs, and protect their future health and well-being. This proactive approach can make all the difference in returning to life, work, or sports at full strength.

Step 2: Diagnosis of Concussion

The EyeBox is a game-changer in concussion management because it provides objective, measurable data to support diagnosis, eliminating the reliance on subjective self-reports or guesswork. Traditional methods often depend on individuals describing their symptoms or completing cognitive tests, which can vary based on the person's perception, communication skills, or effort. This subjectivity can lead to missed or inaccurate diagnoses, delaying effective treatment. The EyeBox, an FDA-cleared technology, uses advanced eye-tracking to measure subtle, involuntary movements that reflect brain function, giving clinicians a clear and unbiased picture of the brain's condition. By offering concrete, scientific evidence, the EyeBox ensures that concussions are identified accurately, even when symptoms might be mild or overlooked.

Additionally, the EyeBox plays a critical role in tracking recovery and guiding return-to-play or return-to-activity decisions. One of the biggest challenges in concussion management is knowing when the brain has fully healed, as symptoms can subside before the underlying injury is resolved. The EyeBox allows healthcare providers to monitor progress objectively over time, ensuring that patients are not cleared to resume activities prematurely, which could put them at risk for further injury or long-term complications. For parents, coaches, and patients, this technology provides peace of mind by delivering reliable data to inform every step of the recovery process. It bridges the gap between science and patient care, making concussion management more precise, effective, and safe.

Step 3: Cutting-Edge Treatment of Concussion

Our treatment approach stands out because it combines cutting-edge technology with a comprehensive, individualized care plan designed to address every aspect of concussion recovery. In addition to utilizing the FDA-cleared EyeBox for precise diagnosis and progress tracking, we offer Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) to accelerate the body’s natural healing processes. HBOT increases oxygen delivery to injured tissues, promoting faster recovery and reducing inflammation in the brain. Paired with rehabilitation services tailored to specific needs—such as vestibular training for balance, exercises for eye-tracking, and a graded return-to-sport or activity plan—we ensure that every patient receives a holistic program to restore their full potential.

What truly sets us apart is our integration of advanced therapies and nutritional support into the recovery journey. Beyond EyeBox and HBOT, we provide access to state-of-the-art modalities like Red Light Therapy, PEMF, and other cutting-edge technologies that optimize healing and overall brain function. Nutritional guidance is another key element of our care, as proper diet and supplements can support the brain’s recovery by reducing inflammation and providing essential nutrients for cellular repair. This multi-faceted approach, tailored to each individual, not only treats the immediate symptoms but also addresses the root causes of dysfunction, ensuring a faster, more complete return to health and activity.

Concussions often disrupt every aspect of daily life—from work and relationships to physical activity and mental clarity. We are here to guide you through a recovery process that doesn’t just manage symptoms but addresses the underlying issues to restore your confidence, energy, and overall well-being.

To ensure lasting success, we provide continued testing and maintenance for your brain as needed. Using advanced tools like the EyeBox, we monitor your progress and ensure that your recovery is on track. If necessary, we offer long-term support to optimize brain health and prevent setbacks, so you can stay at your best.
